Ben Lawers

Wild camping under the aurora and above an inversion

We left Edinburgh on Friday after work, then walked up in the dark to the Munro Beinn Ghlas where we camped. The forecast was indicating inversion conditions and we were not disappointed. Before long the aurora was glimmering overhead and the next morning the cloud obscured anything but the highest peaks.

First sighting of the aurora, pitched up on the summit of Beinn Ghlas.

It grew stronger as it got darker - this is about as strong as it got. Quite unique to be camping under the aurora and above an inversion, though at the time I was pretty cold!

First light over Ben Lawers from Beinn Ghlas. A very high inversion today.

Looking back to Beinn Ghlas from Ben Lawers. The two summits just poking through the cloud are Stob Binnein and Ben More.

Summit of Ben Lawers.

Great conditions

Descending back to the car.

One final Brocken Spectre, and then we were descending into the claggy valley.
